"For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf" is a story of triumph and tragedy as nine African-American women’s lives cross over with one another. Jo (Janet Jackson), Juanita (Loretta Devine), Yasmine (Anika Noni Rose), Tangie (Thandie Newton), Alice (Whoopi Goldberg), Gilda (Phylicia Rashad), Crystal (Kimberly Elise), Nyla (Tessa Thompson), and Kelly (Kerry Washington) are women of various ages dealing with their lives and the different ups and down among them. Each woman is represented by a color thus forming the preverbal rainbow. Tangie can’t maintain a relationship, while Kelly helps people but can’t understand their plights, Juanita and Jo work as doctors but still see the bedside manner from different perspectives. Yasmine sees men as a cheap commodity while Gilda sees sex as a means to something larger and more worthwhile. In the end all the women trade personal views and help each other see the world in a different color and perspective.
