A vendine machine owner called Arliss (Dennis Quaid) goes from one city to another in Texas. He had a terrible childhood and bad memories of it. He has trouble making connections with women as a result. He likes to have quickies with married females and no attachments. Then he meets a woman named Kay (Meg Ryan), who is on the run from a cheap, abusive spouse. Kay finds Arliss when they are in a bar. Then she goes on the road with him and falls for him. But Arliss’s cruel dad Roy (James Caan) shows up. Arliss must try to find a way to get away from his dad and his past and then start fresh with the woman he loves.
