Adventurous duo, Nick Charles (William Powell) and his lovely wife Nora, (Myrna Loy) are back in their roles as detectives. Wishing for nothing more than a private New Year’s Celebration, the couple reluctantly find themselves in the midst of a tangled family mystery. Nora’s cousin Selma (Elissa Landi), is in a dither over the disappearance of her playboy husband Robert (Alan Marshal). Nick and Nora agree to investigate. This leads to a visit to Lichee Club and the sighting of Robert, his new flame and an old nemisis of Nick. After three dead bodies and several near misses on Nick and Nora’s lives, they manage to untangle the truth.
