Spencer Tracy is towering in this "hard-hitting" (The Hollywood Reporter) western with an all-star cast that includes Robert Wagner, Jean Peters, Richard Widmark, Hugh O'Brian, E.G. Marshall and Katy Jurado. The only compassion cattle baron Matt Devereaux (Tracy) shows is for his Native American wife, Princess (Jurado), and their son Joe. So after Joe agrees to take a three-year jail term for a crime his father commits, and his father then dies, Joe's three half brothers take over the land - with a vengeance. Winning a 1954 Academy Award for Best Writing (Motion Picture Story), and garnering a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Jurado, Broken Lance is riveting action from beginning to end. |
