Ross Poldark (John Bowe) is a Member of Parliament while England gets into a war against France (in1810), and the ruler is an insane King. Ross joins the Army on the field of battle, to fight for his country, and his wife Demelza (Mel Martin) and their children Jeremy (Ioan Gruffudd) and Clowance (Kelly Reilly) stay back at home, praying for him. While Ross is away, the family's dispute with George Warleggen (Michael Attwell) fumes. In the meantime, Jeremy and Stephen Cravenson (Nicholas Gleaves), a notorious smuggler becomes intimate friends. Clowance and Cravenson also fall in love. So, the family faces many adversities.
