Working as a bank clerk, William Marble is barely making ends meet for himself, his wife Annie and his daughter Winnie. He has even resorted to embezzling money from one of the bank's clients, although he sees this move as purely a matter of existence. However, through a combination of circumstances, he manages to come into a windfall of money.
