Mickey Gordon (Billy Crystal) is a referee for the NBA. When his father dies he wants to fulfill his father's wishes to be buried in France. With some difficulty he flies there to accompany the body and see to the arrangements. However, Customs won't allow the body in the country because of the disease his father from. In the airport he meets Ellen Andrews (Debra Winger) who works for the airline and helps him get through the trauma. They fall in love and try to merge their lives together. But because he is such a sports fanatic and travels and she travels with her job, too, they have a hard time being able to make it work.
