Accused of murder and pursued by the police, young veteran Cameron (Steve Railsback) stumbles across the filming of an old-time war movie when he is nearly run down on a bridge by a classic Dusenberg that instead hits the river below. When Cameron next finds a scene of carnage on a nearby beach, he meets Eli Cross, the film's director (Peter O'Toole) who offers to hide him from the cops and pay him for stunt work. He, dubbed "Lucky", is to replace the production's last stunt man, who unluckily drowned after the bridge stunt went wrong. During filming Cameron becomes close with Nina Franklin (Barbara Hershey), still romantically entangled with Cross from an earlier relationship. Cross appears to be as jealous as he is megalomaniacal, and Cameron's paranoia mounts as he fears the director may have ulterior motives for the difficult and deadly stunts.
