“Spider” sees a man, Dennis Clegg (Ralph Fiennes) in his mid-life living in a halfway house in London for the mentally ill. Dennis’ mother, Mrs. Clegg (Miranda Richardson) has given him the nickname ‘Spider’. The staff of the halfway house has also adopted the same nickname as well. Dennis has been institutionalized with acute schizophrenia for almost 20 years. Flash backs reveal a young Dennis (Bradley Hall) as a child and how his illness came about and how it affected his family and those around him all leading to his incarceration. One which he has never truly recovered and as his story progresses a sense of sickness is vicariously experienced and his fragile grip on reality shown for all to see.
