Many years ago, Lanny and Vince (Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth) were best friends as well as a famous comedy duo. Their act was at it's peak. Then suddenly, everything changed. They became embroiled in the murder of a beautiful, young woman (Rachel Blanchard). Both Lanny and Vince were cleared, they had alibis. But the duo dissolved and each went their own way. However, years later, ambitious young writer Karen O'Conner (Alison Lohman) senses a story in the old scandal. She starts probing and asking questions, much to the dismay of all concerned. It begins to appear as if nothing was what it seemed. The two partners are reluctantly brought together again after many years and reveal their feelings and perceptions of that fateful night.
