Nigel (Hugh Grant) and Fiona (Kristin Scott Thomas), both totally British, decide to take a ship to India. During the voyage, they meet up with a very unlikely couple. Oscar (Peter Coyote) a disillusioned would-be writer from America and Mimi (Emmanuelle Seigner) a much younger beauty from Paris. Perhaps the oddest thing about the relationship between Mimi and Oscar is that Oscar is confined to a wheelchair. A truly unique relationship blooms between Oscar and Nigel. One evening, Nigel stops by Oscar’s cabin to say hello and Oscar invites him in for a drink. While the two share a drink, Nigel is startled to find Oscar telling the sordid affair that led to his marriage. Nigel finds himself hearing details about the couple’s life that he would rather not know. Although he views this conversation with distaste, at the same time he finds himself coming back night after night to hear the complete tale. Nigel will never be the same.
