The story is based on a novel and revolves around a writer Arturo Bandini (Colin Farrel). Arturo is in a state of depression and moves to Los Angeles where he struggles to become a more accomplished writer than just being a mere short story writer. When not writing he hangs out in a local pub where he meets a waitress, Camilla (Salma Hayek). They soon get attracted towards each other. However their insecurities and difference of opinions about life keep them apart. Inspite of spending a lot of time together they are unable to make a connection with each other. Life does not turn out to be very good for them still they keep moving to achieve their dreams. Arturo keeps trying to graduate from being a short story writer by penning down a manly novel and Camilla continues to desire for the love of this unpleasant man.
