In the men's ward of Haven Hospital, things are often close to being out of control. The only person able to maintain any sort of control over the ward is the Matron (Hattie Jacques), who is feared by most of the men on the ward. Only one man, Oliver Reckitt (Kenneth Williams) is brave enough to stand up to her. The antics on the ward are different every day, with someone always finding some way to get into some trouble or have some fun. Patient Ted York (Terence Longdon) is having a not so secret romance with nurse Denton (Shirley Eaton). Jack Bell (Leslie Philips) decides he wants his bunion removed immediately, so some of his friends, also patients, decide to do him a favor and remove it for him. With all of the antics on this ward, will even the Matron be able to keep the men in line?
