Elsie Wright (Florence Hoath)'s father has been declared missing during World War I, so she is sent to live in England with her cousin Frances Griffiths (Elizabeth Earl). Soon after, the girls discover winged creatures like fairies in the gardens by their home. They photograph these creatures and show their pictures to Frances' startled and surprised parents. The girls are quickly known throughout the country. After Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Peter O'Toole) and Harry Houdini (Harvey Keitel) see the pictures, they personally escort the young girls around town. The girls are enjoying their newfound fame, but quickly find the downside of this fame when reporters begin following the girls around, and curious strangers come to the garden to try to take pictures of their own.
