When a cynical media darling known as the homemaker celebrity with the most American virtue may be exposed as a total fraud, she must scramble to save her bacon. Elizabeth Lane (Barbara Stanwyk) can’t cook and hates the suburbs, but to millions of Americans she is a homespun homemaker with a husband and child. Not even her titan publisher, Alexander Yardley (Sydney Greenstreet), knows the truth about her. She has an army of assistants (S. Z. Sakall, Una O’Connor) to find recipes, provide homilies about life, and other devices to create a public image. Lane is put on the spot when she must host her publisher who wants to give a hospitalized sailor (Dennis Morgan) a lovely and old-fashioned “Christmas in Connecticut” holiday. Miss Lane must whip up holiday frenzy overnight, including finding a home and husband to order. Her plot complications includes falling in love with the sailor who is visiting and facing life in the suburbs.
