Older Golden Retriever Shadow (Don Ameche), pampered kitty Sassy (Sally Field), and pound puppy Chance (Michael J Fox) have misunderstood why they have been left with strangers while their family is out of town. The three are convinced that something must be wrong with their family and, as any loyal pet would do, they set out on a journey home. Unfortunately, home is hundreds of miles away over mountains, through canyons and down rivers. The three stick together and learn to depend on and respect one another. Along the way they have to overcome dangers from wildlife, Mother Nature and man in order to return to the home and family they love.
