In “Lover, Come Back,” the cutthroat world of 1950s Madison Avenue is skewed with a light touch. Carol Templeton (Doris Day) must face a male dominated work world where men like Jerry Webster (Rock Hudson) lie, cheat, and use people to win accounts. With his slimey boss (Tony Randall), the Agency helps Webster face accusations of impropriety in business from Carol by agreeing to go along with a new account for a fictional product, paying off some people. They even go as far as to hire a putative scientist (Jack Krushen) and make commercials with a voluptuous model (Edie Adams). With her career and independence, Carol is a fish out of water against these forces, and Jerry tries to seduce her at the aquarium. Through mistaken identity, Carol begins to like Jerry because she thinks he is a geeky scientist, not her archenemy. Jerry and Carol do spend a night together, but she does not want to inform him of her predicament as she is ready to face life as a single-mother in the conservative early 1960s. s to seduce her at the aquarium.
