This adaptation of the Shakespeare classic is moved from the 15th century to the 20th as Richard III (Ian McKellen) is a scheming member of the Fascist party of alternate reality England. Murdering his way into power, Richard kills first his brother and then the poor young princes who would otherwise have risen to power. The collision of Shakespeare’s language with a 20th century background makes for an unusual experience as Richard screams his famous lines: “My horse! My horse! My kingdom for a horse!” in the climactic battle scene that ends the play. |
