Mary Griffith (Sigourney Weaver) is a staunch Christian and she raises her children with the traditional teachings of the Presbyterian Church. But, when she finds out that her son Bobby Griffith (Ryan Kelley) is a homosexual, she believes that God alone can heal him. Anxious to please his mother, Bobby obeys her, but the church's condemnation of homosexuality causes him to grow more and more inhibited and dejected. So, he moves away from his mother, but finally commits suicide due to his growing self-reproach. A shocked Mary then begins to question her belief and the laws of the church. At last, she is exposed to the world of gays. She slowly understands that Bobby was not wrong but was only having unusual ideas. So, she has to accept the fact and change her attitude towards homosexuals.
