f you've ever been in love, you know it's a wonderful and painful thing. I don't think that there's anyone out there who can't identify with an unrequited love story...even us guys, we just hate to admit it. A new movie by Phillip Guzman, Desdemona: A Love Story, has everything you'd want in a tragic love story...and more. Gil is a Mexican immigrant whose father was killed crossing the border. Gil's been looked after by his father's friend, Dustin, for years. But now, Dustin is dying and it's up to Gil and his brother (Dustin's real son) Rod to raise the money for the funeral costs. The problem is that the guys get money by playing basketball for cash, and that's not panning out too well! Gil hatches a plan to kidnap the wife of a rich man and ransom her for the money they need, but what he doesn't tell Rod is that this woman is Desdemona, a girl who Gil has been in love with since childhood, and that Gil is desperate to discover if she still loves him too. The plan (as you might suspect) doesn't go as planned and soon the three find themselves wrapped up in something that none of them could have foreseen. Desdemona: A Love Story is a wonderful film, the writing is fantastic, the acting is top notch and I actually found myself hoping for a positive outcome for what was obviously a tragedy. If you've ever loved someone and had to leave them behind in life, then you're going to love this movie, Guzman is either writing from experience or has the worlds best imagination, I was truly moved by the star-crossed lovers and their sorrowful and lovely tale. I'm giving Desdemona: A Love Story four out of four cigars, it's not for everyone, but if you have a soul, then you're going to be moved by this movie. You can find out more about Desdemona: A Love Story by heading over to the Desdemona web page. --Brian Morton for roguecinema.com
