When Birdee Pruitt discovers her husband is having an affair with her best friend, she packs up her things and takes her daughter to her hometown of Smithville, Texas to live with her mother (Gena Rowlands). The entire town knows of Birdee's problems, as they all witnessed her on a talk-show that her best friend brought her on to tell her the truth about the affair. While her daughter, Bernice (Mae Whitman) is giving her attitude for leaving her father, Birdee is also getting attacked by old friends who are enjoying the fact that her life is falling apart. When she runs into an old flame from high school, Justin (Harry Connick, Jr.), things get even more complicated. Justin still longs for his sweetheart, but Birdee's heart may be too wounded to love again.
