Carlton Garret (Justin Timberlake) has never known his father, but his fatally ill mother Katherine (Mary Steenburgen) wants a reunion of her family. A major league superstar nicknamed Lonestar who is now retired, Kyle Garret (Jeff Bridges) refuses to acknowledge his own son, but Carlton becomes determined to meet and to bond with the old star who is appearing at a baseball convention. Out of some insecurity, Carlton must bring his girlfriend Lucy (Kate Mara) along in case he cannot handle his own emotions or his father’s bizarre and eccentric personality. He must convince the elder man to come quietly back home to see Katherine, but the trip is rife with missed opportunities, miscommunication, and Kyle’s penchant for brawling. |
