Three confirmed bachelors (Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg, Ted Danson) have adjusted to raising five-year-old Mary (Robin Weisman) along with her Mother, Sylvia (Nancy Travis). Although Peter (Selleck) has fallen in love with Sylvia, he is reluctant to ask her to marry him and possibly interfere with the biological father's interest and responsibility. (Danson). Acting in a play, Sylvia receives the attention of the director, Edward (Christopher Casanove) and after he proposes decides to uproot Mary to follow him to England. Once the bachelors realize that Edward intends to place Mary in a boarding school, they head for England to stop the wedding. Going to great lengths to stop the wedding, Peter comes to the realization that he truly loves Sylvia and he should be Mary's father.
