As big business takes hold of the rail industry, the gang at the local depot is forced to adapt to new rules and wrestle with middle management's double-talk, or decide to take their chances with severance pay. Agreements long ago set in place are suddenly undermined as the new as the new Managing Director wipes the slate clean. Reliable workers are sent to pasture, and bonds of friendship are pulled apart as they confront difficult life choices.

Tensions mount as the men show up at the depot but find that there isn't any work. When sent to a derailment to assess damages the lads are dumbfounded to discover that their co-workers who took the severance cash are getting paid more to be hired out from an agency. When underbidding to win contracts becomes the state of play, safety falls by the wayside and the men find themselves with a life or death choice that will change their lives forever.
