The telephone rings and the baby-sitter, Jill Johnson (Carol Cane) answers only to receive whispered threats, “Have you checked the children lately?” The phone calls continue and she becomes paranoid until a “wannabe” detective (Charles Durning) attempts to track down the caller (Tony Beckley) who is a deranged killer. The killer is caught and put in a mental institution. Seven years later after escaping from the mental institution. He torments a New Yorker named Tracy (Colleen Dewhurst) before he decides to find Jill. No longer a teenager, Jill is now a wife and mother. The killer begins once again to torment Jill and her baby sitter with relentless phone calls and whispered threats.
