Fanny Price (Francis O’Connor) is a poor 10 year old girl sent to live with her rich aunt and Uncle Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram and her cousins Tom, Edmund (Jonny Lee Miller), Maria and Julia in Mansfield Park. Fanny’s Uncle Sir Thomas and cousin Tom leave for Antigua. During their absence Henry (Alessandro Nivola) and Mary (Embeth Davidtz) Crawford move into the local parsonage. Maria is very attracted to Henry despite being engaged to the bumbling Mr. Rushworth, and Edmund develops an attachment to Mary Crawford. Tom Bertram returns to Mansfield Park with his friend Mr. Yates and they plan to perform the play Lovers’ Vows that is stopped by Sir Thomas’ return. During this time Henry Crawford proposes to Fanny, but Fanny refuses and is sent back to her home. Henry Crawford comes to see her and proposes. Fanny accepts at first and then takes it back. Fanny’s cousin Tom has taken ill and Fanny returns to Mansfield Park. Fanny discovers Maria and Henry sleeping together and Maria is immediately disowned by the family. Tom makes a recovery, and Edmund finally sees Mary Crawford is not a good woman and he finally realizes his feelings for Fanny.
