The housing shortage in Tokyo during 1964 Olympic Games leads to mix-ups and romance. Sir William Rutland (Cary Grant) talks his way into renting Christine Easton's (Samantha Eggar) sitting room for the duration of the Games. Desperate for the money yet afraid of public reaction, Christine tries to keep her new lodger a secret from her stuffy fiance; a task that is not helped when Sir William invites a stranded American athlete Steve Davis (Jim Hutton) to sub-let the room. Attraction blooms between the two young people and Sir William decides that it is his mission to bring the two together, even if he has to join in the Olympic events to do it.
