Jack (Henry Winkler) returned from the war in Vietnam 4 years ago, but he still hasn't recovered from the horrors he experienced while overseas - he is still haunted by terrible nightmares. To try to get away, Jack gets on a bus heading towards California. He has a plan to set up a worm farm for fishing baits with a few of his friends from his days in Vietnam. While on the bus, he meets Carol (Sally Field), a young woman who just left her fiancee, four days before the wedding. When Jack learns that one of his friends is backing out on their plan, Jack begins to lose hope once again. Carol begins to care for Jack, and decides to stay by his side and support him during his difficult time.
