Barton Fink (John Turturro) is a successful Broadway playwright who relocates to California to work for a Hollywood studio boss, Jack Lipnick (Michael Lerner). Holed up in a fleabag Hollywood hotel with a severe case of writer's block, Barton passes his time by being fascinated with his neighbor Charlie Meadows (John Goodman) as an example of the everyday common man he is struggling to write about. Struggling to shake his writer's block, Barton seeks out the advice of another screenwriter, Bill Mayhew (John Mahoney). He finds out the Mayhew's works are actually ghost-written by his wife Audrey (Judy Davis) with whom Barton begins an affair. Barton awakes one morning to find Audrey dead in bed next to him. Barton seeks out Charlie to help him out of trouble and Charlie agrees telling Barton to get out of town and giving him a mysterious box. Barton's writer's block abates and he finishes his screenplay. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Barton is wanted by the police who tell him Charlie is a wanted serial killer.
