After World War I, Lottie (Josie Lawrence) and Rose (Miranda Richardson), two British housewives from London, feel locked up in their marriage and decide to rent a little castle in Italy for the month of April. To share in the expenses, they place an ad for two more travel partners. The widow Mrs. Fisher (Joan Plowright) responds to the ad, while Lady Caroline Dester (Polly Walker) has had enough bad relationships to make her want to be away from all men. Their differences turn out to be a basis for sisterly bonding, making it an enchanted April.
