An unhappy woman named Grace Beasley (Kathy Bates) dreams of meeting legendary crooner Victor Fox (Jonathan Price). She almost does when she wins a trip to his television concert, but Fox is murdered that night and never appears. Traumatized, she leaves her husband (Dan Aykroyd). Grace makes a pilgrimage to England to tour Fox’s home and roots. On the way she makes friends with Julie Andrews (Julie Andrews) and discovers Victor Fox was gay and had a lover Dirk (Rupert Everett). She antagonizes Fox’s sister Nola (Lynn Redgrave) along the way, but maintains her idealism. Grace and Dirk bond and return to the United States to discover who killed Victor and why. She then meets Barry Manilow (Barry Manilow) and learns how happiness and joy is all around her.
