Jake 'The Muss' Heke (Temuera Morrison) is a violent, often out-of-work father in South Auckland. Descended from a poorly-regarded tribe, his wife Beth is by contrast the 'princess' of her people, a prestigious Maori tribe. Jake's tumultuous, abusive relationship with Beth forms much of the basis of the film. Complicating their relationship are Jake's friends, a loose gang of delinquents who feel entitled to taking over the house for their parties whenever they wish. As Beth's four children demonstrate that they are increasingly affected by their father's violent tendencies and intrusive friends, Beth must decide whether to stay with the man she loves or fight for the dignity of her family, who 'once were warriors'.
