In this delightful adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel, Emma Woodhouse (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a wealthy young girl in the mid 1800’s England. She prides herself on her matchmaking abilities. When she meets and befriends the poor Harriet Smith (Toni Collette), she decides that this girl is worthy of marrying above her station and that she must find her an acceptable groom. Harriet is already in love with a local farmer, but Emma convinces her that she can do better. Emma fails in matching Harriet to the Reverend Elton (Alan Cumming) and Frank Churchill (Ewan McGregor). In the meantime, her own search for love seems to be failing as well. Meanwhile, her family friend, Mr. Knightley (Jeremy Northam), serves as her conscience as he criticizes her for dismissing Harriet’s love for the farmer and Emma’s behavior around certain people. Now, Emma has to do some serious soul searching to find a happy ever after for both Harriet and herself.
