Mike Gambril (Warren Beatty) is an ex-football star who meets Terry McKay (Annette Bening) on a flight to Sydney. When their flight is forced to make an unplanned landing on a small atoll, they are forced to spend time together. When they are put on a ship to take the plane passengers to the island, they begin to realize their attractions for one another. This realization comes with a complication: they are both engaged to other people. In an attempt to give their feelings some time to simmer, they agree to meet in New York in three months to see how they feel about one another then. When one of the two doesn't show up for the prearranged meeting, it would seem that their relationship is over. When they run into one another later, though, they begin to question everything they have been thinking about their relationship. Will they end up together, or will one or both of the two decide to go back to their fiance?
