Simon Birch (Ian Michael Smith) was born with a small body that would not develop, but a mind that developed more quickly than the children his age in his small town. However, he finds a friend in Joe Wenteworth (Joseph Mazzello) who is also an outsider in a small town because his beautiful mother, Rebecca Wenteworth (Ashley Judd), got pregnant and has raised him without identifying who his father is. Simon's intelligence challenges his teachers and the minister in the town, but because of his size, they ask him to play the part of the baby Jesus in the manger in the Christmas pageant. Long before he accepted this role, however, Simon believed God has a purpose for his life and a unique mission to fulfill.
