Chorus girls Carol (Joan Blondell), Trixie (Aline MacMahon), and Polly (Ruby Keller) are having a rough time. They were set to be in the new Broadway show by Barney Hopkins (Ned Sparks), but were turned away along with the rest of the cast when the show was cancelled due to unpaid bills. When the girls hear that Barney is producing a new show, he agrees to let them in the show if they can help him find a backer to fund it. Polly goes to her friend Brad Roberts (Dick Powell), a man from a wealthy upper class family, and Brad agrees to back the show. When Brad's family learns of his actions, they come to New York to stop him and end his relationship with Polly. When Brad's brother Lawrence (Warren William) and their attorney Peabody (Guy Kibbee) come to the city, they mistake Carol for Polly, and she does nothing to correct their confusion. Will Carol be able to distract the men from their initial purpose for coming to New York?
