“Purgatory” is a movie set in the classic western backdrop of a bank robbery. Now Blackjack Britton (Eric Roberts) and what’s left of his gang are off into the desert to avoid a pursuing lynch mob. When a dust storm come up out of nowhere, the gang find themselves in the quiet and peaceful town of Refuge. Sheriff Forrest (Sam Shepard), the town marshal explains that Refuge is a weaponless town, completely without any means to defend themselves. Blackjack and his crew begin to ponder the possibilities of a town unable to defend itself. However, Sonny Dillard (Brad Rowe) the youngest member of the Blackjack Posse befriends Doc Woods (Randy Quaid) and learns the true secret of Refuge, that the would be innocent bystanders of the town are not who they claim to be.
