The film is called "The Long Good Friday" because the events in the story unfold over the course of an English Easter holiday. Harold Shand (Bob Hoskins) is the protagonist, a thriving London gangster who wants to go legit with the help of American mafia money to fund his newest venture. Harold rules the seedy London underworld and the profitable dock enterprise with seeming ease, until violence from the outside - a series of unaccounted for bombings- disrupts his kingdom and threatens his well-being. No one knows who is responsible, although the Irish Republican Army is a prime suspect. Ultimately it appears Shand might be betrayed by someone close at hand. Girlfriend and mistress Victoria (Helen Mirren) becomes a player or pawn in the deadly game.
