Banned for decades, this rediscovered classic from the Czech Republic represents an important contribution to the cinema of the Holocaust. The story begins when Dr. Hannah Kaufmann marries a fellow doctor, a Czech gentile, but any chance at a happy life is disrupter by historic events. Distant Journey follows the struggles of Hannah and her family from the time of the Nazi Occupation of Prague through her experiences in the transit camp of Theresienstadt (modern Terezin).

Shot only three years after the year ended, the film was one of the first to deal with the Holocaust. Director Alfred Radok skillfully weaves together documentary-style footage with expressionist dramatic sequences and conveys both the reality of history and the nightmare of its impact.
