The Ernst Lubitsch/Pola Negri version of Prosper Merimee's Carmen was filmed in Germany in 1918, but not released in the U.S. until the Spring of 1921. A Spanish cavalryman falls in love with Carmen, a gypsy dancer, which leads to his demise. He gives up everything for her including his girlfriend and his honor, but she tosses him aside and goes after a matador. |
